SMS Popup v1.0.7 (and v1.0.6) in Android Market now

Head on over to Android Market to grab v1.0.7 of SMS Popup. I haven't had a lot of spare time recently to work on the app (which is also why I forgot to write a blog post for v1.0.6) so I've mostly been working on tweaks and bug fixes. Assuming I have a bit more spare time in the coming weeks/months, expect to see some larger features in the next release.

SMS Popup v1.0.7 (and v1.0.6)

  • Soft keyboard shows automatically now when using quick reply
  • New option to leave screen off when a new message comes in
  • Several bug fixes: fixed issue with phone not always waking up, fixed issue with notification icon contact name not showing correctly
  • Several other app tweaks (including new higher res app icon for higher res phones like Droid and Nexus One!

  2. I'm no longer receiving notifications for any SMS messages. Rebooted my phone and also toggled the enable/disable popups from the SMS popup app. Nothing is working. Please address this soon, thanks!

  3. correction, only the people who I've set up individual contact notifications for aren't working. People who text me who I don't have an individual notification set up for, still work. Hope this helps.

  12. It should be back in Market now. If it was crashing for you please go back to Market and re-update to get the fixed version.

Angel: Any phone with a high-res screen will have the newer icon. I haven't yet made it a configuration option (still coming soon)

Michael: You can just monitor this blog for latest updates and changes to the app. There is a email group for discussion on the app (but I only post significant updates to the app there):
    http://groups.google.com/group/sms-popup-for-android

And the changelog is also kept on the Google Code site:

  14. with new update if I receive a SMS from an email address it pops up even if that email address belongs to a contact that's cutomized not to pop up, that was not the case with the previous version. Can this be fixed?

  15. Have an issue after the most recent update. If my messaging app is open my audio alert with only kick in for a second and stop. If messaging app is closed audio alert is fine.

  16. Chaim: I see you opened up an issue for this on the google code site, can you add some more detail about your phone config so I can debug easier?
    http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/detail?id=89

Monstermile: I can't reproduce this on my Nexus One, if you can reliably reproduce then file a bug here:

  17. Folks who are on call and part of the world of paging can forward the pages to a regular cellphone which can showup as user@domain.com; it would be awesome if we could set a custom sound specifying '*@domain.com' in addition to already being able to select a contact from the address book. This way I could differentiate from my contacts SMS and an critical work-related SMS (page).

  18. I'm seeing an issue on the Nexus One quite frequently, but I cannot reliably reproduce it yet. I have the app set to turn the screen on and show the popup when I receive a text. It seems to be after the phone has been sleeping for a while (but I cannot confirm this yet) -- when a text arrives, the screen will turn on as if it was going to show the popup (but it only briefly shows the desktop for less than a second), then it shows the lock screen with no popup window, plays the incoming SMS sound, and then shuts off -- all in the span of about 5 seconds (even though I have the screen-on timeout for 1 minute). Then when I turn the screen on and slide to unlock, there is no popup on the screen even though a text has been received. But other times, it works as expected. Has anyone else seen this? I even restored my phone back to factory defaults and it still happens.

  19. Is there any planned support to automatically play the SMS to a bluetooth headset? This functionality would be incredible.

  20. I have a Motorolla DROID from Verrizon. I installed the latest 1.7 of this app. It is great but has clear bugs.

When I have this app running I receive no notifications of any email. When I disable this app my email notifications come back. Not only the email notification is missing but no email will dowbnload to any of my inboxes. I had to uninstall your app.

Can you please fix these bugs for the DROID soon. How can I help?

  21. Travis: You can add a feature request on our code site. I think there's already one in there to filter based on keywords in the text message. Go here:
    http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/entry?template=Feature%20Request

Mike Welch: I feel like I've seen this before myself but find it hard to reproduce. If you want you can add a bug at the code site and if you or someone else can reproduce I should be able to nail down the problem:
    http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/entry

Arlieth Tralare: This is not planned right now, but would be cool. Add a feature request at the link I posted above.

Billy: I have never seen issues like this before and in fact, SMS Popup really doesn't touch the email portion of the phone so I'm surprised to hear this is happening. Feel free to file a bug as per above link. If you can post clear instructions on how to reproduce on my own phone then I may be able to fix the issues.

  22. I would love for the popup not to pop up when I am typing a message to someone. It gets a little annoying when you are messaging.

    ReplyDelete
  23. There is a new version 1.0.8 beta 1 now posted at the google code site... anyone know what the changes are?

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Billy: I also have a droid and have no such issue... maybe it's a conflict with SMS Pop and another app that only creates the problem when both are installed?

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Kahil: there is no real way to detect what app is currently active - however I did a sort of hack which should detect of the messaging app is open most of the time. what phone/os do you have? it only checks for the system messaging app, if you're using another app it will still popup

@tmcb82: there's a few bug fixes in there (biggest one is fixing custom notifications for sms's from email addresses). I also added support for Android quick contacts now (available in android 2.0+ phones only). I have a few more things I'm working on before 1.08 is complete (in the meantime I normally post beta's to the code site with the latest changes).

  26. Adam, this is my most valued app! Love it! also I am running a nexus one and would like to suggest an option. I use the dock and clock app for a bedside clock, but when i get a mid-night text it does the popup and the screen will stay on all night long. I would like an option to disable popups when the clock app is running. Also while in landscape in smspopup quick reply window, during the middle of typing my keyboard will dissapear. I tap the input window to bring the keyboard back and anything i type doesnt show up. But if i hit sent after typing text that didnt show in the quick reply screen, it sends the invisible text. if you need more details feel free to email me. new.wildlife@gmail.com

  27. @New Wildlife: The latest beta supports the Nexus dock (and hopefully Droid dock), you can try it out here:
    http://android-smspopup.googlecode.com/files/SMSPopup-1.0.8-beta2.apk
(or wait for the next release).

As for your other issue, I'm not exactly sure what you mean, if you could file an issue at the code site here:
    http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/entry
(please include as much information as possible such as screen shots or exactly how to reproduce + phone OS version etc.)

    Thanks!

  28. Adam, I only use the default messaging app. I have the most recent version of your app. Whenever I am in the messaging app and a msg comes in I get a pop-up no matter if I am typing a msg or not. I'm fine with the pop-up when in other app, but when in the messaging app it is annoying. The popup shouldn't come up when in the messaging app, the notification bar notification is enough.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, and I am using the Droid with the most recent rom and version of your app. I thought the restrict option was meant for this issue, but that just disables the popup altogether.

  30. Just posted a review of SMS Popip at http://www.androidmom.com/2010/02/sms-popup-review.html

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Kahil: Can you file an issue at our tracker:
    http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/list
The thing is, there isn't a proper way to detect which app the user is looking at, so instead I use a kind of hack. It works for me and in many cases but for some people it doesn't seem to, not sure why. If you can put as much information in the issue tracker as possible perhaps we can work out what's going on here.

Mommy Has an Android Now: Funny username =) Thanks for posting the review. For the issue with the notification icon not going, see here:

  32. ANNOYING. Haven't been able to use this app in a while due to the dodgy HTC Legend 2.1-update update. Had to resort to using Handcent (badtimes!!). Can't wait till there's a fix and i can use sms pop up again! :D
Just a question...when I press quick reply on SMS Popup, after I've sent a quick reply, the "new message" notification doesn't disappear?
    Thanks!

  33. Joshua: what exactly is not working on the Legend w/2.1? For the new message icon, just be sure to turn off system messaging notifications and use SMS Popup's notifications, see here:
