A minor SMS Popup update is now available from Android Market. I have been working on refactoring a lot of the code to allow for multiple messages within the popup - before spending the time to do that I wanted to get this minor update out. So stay tuned, hopefully the next release will have more significant updates!

SMS Popup v1.1.0
- Added a larger selection of notification icons to choose from (including the new gingerbread icon for Nexus S users)
- Added new option to enable/disable notification sound while on a call
- Updated and added translations
- A few minor bug fixes
"Disable notification while on call"
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!!!
Bryan
Everything works perfect except when someone sends me a picture mail I don't receive it all da time
ReplyDeleteHope you can make the status of "Sending Message" and "Message Sent" to be appear on top of the locked screen.
ReplyDeleteIf possible also add the notification when the message is failed to send and give an option to resend it even the screen is locked :)
@rosalyn: if the message shows up in the system messaging app but there is no popup, then please file a new issue here http://goo.gl/hVLGb
ReplyDelete@Shinichi: unfortunately the "sending message" text uses the system "toast" type messages so there is no way to show these on top of the screen lock. the system should still notify you if a message fails to send (via a sound), but there is no popup with "resend" at this time (maybe one day!)
does anyone know if there's a way of knowing that your message has been received after you sent it?
ReplyDelete@jacqueline: Try turning on delivery confirmation in SMS Popup options (assuming you're using the quick reply feature of SMS Popup).
ReplyDelete@Adam: Thanks for replying .... I saw handcent sms able to do that but in the end I choose to use the stock sms + your sms popup program as its lighter in memory.
ReplyDeleteWell if there is nothing you can do about that then its fine as your program is already very good to me ^_^
Cheers and have a merry christmas :)
Ever since this update I have been getting notifications of old already been checked messages. When I get a new message I get 2 new notifications even though there is only one message then I read it then close it then within 10 min it pops up again. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI loved this app! Thanks for making it Adam.
ReplyDeleteRequest:
It would be even better if you added Google Talk integration. I find myself using Gtalk interchangeably with my texts a lot. Especially if I am communicating with people that are on there PC. It would be great to get the same popup notifications for Gtalk as I do with my texts when using your app. Thanks!
Please make it compatible with Xperia X10. It used to work fine earlier but some functions broken after 2.1 update.
ReplyDelete@Jason: if you can provide more information I can try and look into this, file an issue here:
ReplyDeletehttp://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/entry
@AlexNC: a gtalk popup would be cool, but unfortunately I don't have the time to add this right now, maybe in the future
@Vinay: please file an issue for reproducible problems, there are a few known Xperia issues in the FAQ: http://goo.gl/QOYSW
Will you be incorporating a swipe function for multiple texts messages in the popup? That would be awesome.
ReplyDelete@Hector: Yes, I'm working on this already.
ReplyDeleteIs there any way to suppress the pop-ups while using google maps navigation? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have sprint as carrier and I can't seem to put a signature on my sms messages...how do I do that? I know I'm probably overlooking it but please just help!! -candi
ReplyDeleteThe FAQ's section says that the led colour issue is a hardware issue, however if I use Handcent I can successfully change the colour to whatever I want. I am using a Desire. I love your app and this is my only tiny gripe with it. Steve.
ReplyDelete@kakky: right now the pops are suppressed automatically if the phone is docked in car mode, i'm not sure if you can trigger this manually by running the "car home" app or not
ReplyDelete@candi: if you want to use sms popup's signature feature you will need to enable "quick reply" inside sms popup's settings
@steve: unfortunately many HTC phones don't support the official android sdk notification LED functionality (which is what sms popup uses). some folks have found workarounds for this by directly accessing the lower level system directories for configuring the LED, however being just one person, it would be difficult for me to maintain device specific configuration so sadly this is not an option. the correct way for this to work is for HTC to update their Sense UI to support the SDK LED notifications. you may be able to find another 3rd party app that does the LED piece like the "Led me know" app, see this thread over at XDA for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700418
Hi Adam,
ReplyDeleteWhen I manually select "Car Panel" (I think this is what you mean) from the app drawer on my Droid Incredible, the pop-ups still come through. An option to disable SMS Pop-up during navigation would be a great addition to your app.
Thanks again for your help!
This is a top-notch app that I will donate to. I have a requested feature, though. I would like to see notification adjustments based on the time of day and day of the week. For example, a text that comes in at 1 am on a Tuesday morning will not generate a sound notification, but will instead reply to the sender saying that they should call if this is an emergency. Or a text at 5pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays will also arrive silently, telling the sender that I am in class at the moment and will be out at 5:15. I have looked for this service and it does not appear to be available anywhere. Doable?
ReplyDeleteI am unable to change The notification led color. Was able to do it with either go sms or handcent. Not sure which one exactly. This one has the options but I'm unable to get it done. M using HTC DESIRE with Froyo.
ReplyDeleteDisregard the comment above. Sorry for the redundant enquiry. Didn't realise it was already answered. Thank you.
ReplyDelete@kakky: I think car dock mode triggers the "Car Panel" type app but not the other way around, unfortunately there may not be a way to trigger it manually without a physical dock. I'm not sure there's a reliable way to check navigation is running, the best that could be done is probably to have a switch to toggle the popup on/off. You can file a feature request here - http://goo.gl/LOpGO
ReplyDeleteSvenbot: Definitely do-able, just not sure when I'll have the time to implement. You can file a feature request here - http://goo.gl/LOpGO
Please take out square box from the latest android notification icons because it makes it look cheesy and like when we receive multiple sms/mms msgs we can quick reply them without having to go back to da inbox. Other than that GREAT app:)
ReplyDelete@jiggs: not sure what you mean by square box, the icon is configurable though so you should be able to choose whichever icon you like
ReplyDeleteCould you add the opportunity to reply with JackSMS, Skebby or other app?
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
@Tinik: As long as the 3rd party SMS app supports that Intent, it should prompt you to use it when clicking "Reply", eg. try Chomp or Handcent. So you may need to get the authors of JackSMS/Skebby to support the Reply Intent.
ReplyDeleteBut if i go in my contact i'm able to send sms with JackSMS instead of the original Android app...
ReplyDeleteIs this a "jack problem"?
I second svenbot!!!!!! If he made the request, is there a place I could go to vote for it? That would be amazing!
ReplyDeletePs: thanks for am amazing app! As soon as I get paid next, I'm definitely donating! I tried handcent (mostly for the pop up feature) and had some issues with it so now I'm using the stock sms and your app and I love it!
Adam K, which intent does SMS Popup use?
ReplyDelete@Tinik: You can actually set it to use two different types, one is a "reply to sms thread" intent, the other is "send sms to X phone number" intent. You can try toggling to the other one by going into Button Configuration in SMS Popup and changing the Reply button to Reply (to phone number). That may help trigger JackSMS if it only supports one of those intents. For technical details of the two intents, see here:
ReplyDeletehttp://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/source/browse/trunk/SMSPopup/src/net/everythingandroid/smspopup/SmsPopupUtils.java?r=312#655
http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/source/browse/trunk/SMSPopup/src/net/everythingandroid/smspopup/SmsPopupUtils.java?r=312#685
@Michelle: If svenbot filed a feature request on the google code site then you can star it to vote it up, if not you can file the feature request yourself (link in my reply above).
Adam, I'm talking about the various android icons you recently put in your latest update doesn't look like the normal/regular black android icon, the new icons have like a highlighted box behind the icon so it makes it look weird lol so can u put them(colored android icons) like the stock android icon:) sorry if I sound confusing...
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteHi, great app, but... the blue square as popup is not very stylish :s, I didn't find anything to get this style:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.android-software.fr/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/smspopup1.png, is there anything to do to have this kind of UI ?
and a transparent panel would be great too ^^ (because it solid color...)
BTW, I'm under Android 2.1 With Xperia X10 Mini Pro.
@JiGGs: Ahh, most of the icons should have a transparent background and the stock Android ones should all run as they did before. Of course feel free to create/donate additional icons if needed (the new ones were kindly donated by another user). Let me know if you can help!
ReplyDelete@Leoberos: I do want to make the popup look better in a future release. Adding transparency shouldn't be too hard but ultimately I would like to add proper skinning ability. Of course I'm super short on time as it is so it may take a while to build :)
If you want the trackball to light up instead of the LED beside the speaker (tested on HTC Hero GSM). Then follow this guide created by me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908898
ReplyDeleteBest regards
Kenneth
Great app! Could do with repeat "Repeat Interval" & "Max Repeat Count" for notifications perhaps.
ReplyDeleteHow about a "GMail popup" app to give similar control functionality on GMail notifications?
@Ken: Thanks for posting this!
ReplyDelete@Gavin: There should be an option for reminder interval (there isn't one for max reminder count though). Gmail and Gtalk popups have been requested many times, unfortunately I don't have the time to build these (hopefully someone else will though!)
Okay Adam :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I've just noticed, there is a contact picture displayed only if you've added a picture by yourself to the contact, if the contact picture has been setup by a facebook sync, the contact picture won't display at all with the popup.
Maybe there is a test to perform to check if a picture has already been set or if the popup should use the facebook contact picture in the phone? not sure how you may do that ^^'
@Leoberos: Unfortunately the Facebook app does not give other apps access to the contact photos. The best way to get them to show is sync them over to your Gmail contacts, see the FAQ for more info: http://goo.gl/irL0l
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam, found the settings. Simply overlooked on my initial setting up of app ;0)
ReplyDeleteHello. Very nice app. Thank you. Would it be possible to add a different notification sound under "enable reminder"?
ReplyDelete@Joseph: yes it would be possible, it's just a matter of adding another configurable option :) file a feature request at the google code site so we can track it:
ReplyDeletehttp://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/entry?template=Feature%20Request
Would love the option to personalize the notification icon for individual contacts!!
ReplyDeleteShould the popup show on top of the locked screen? If so, is there a way to get mine to do that because it is not on my droid x?
ReplyDelete@Lee: maybe in a future release, got a few other things to add first.
ReplyDelete@Meredith: yes it should show on top of the locked screen. the exception is if you have corporate device policy installed - your administrator has the ability to disallow 3rd party apps from unlocking the screen.
Thanks it's actually working now! Im still working on getting pictures to work. From searching on the internet I've seen that with Verizon there is a way to use the backup assistant and "my Verizon" website to sync phone contacts to gmail contacts. No idea if pictures sync as well though... has anyone else tried or already done this??
ReplyDelete@Meredith: contact photos should show as long as they are either sync'd from Gmail contacts or added manually (they will NOT show from a sync'd facebook account though as the facebook app does not allow this). See the FAQ for how to sync your contact photos from FB over to Gmail: http://goo.gl/irL0l
ReplyDeleteHaving some trouble with SMS Popup lately. Each time an SMS is received it says there are 2 Unread messages. When I drag the slider down the unread message says "Unknown".
ReplyDeleteIf I uninstall SMS Popup and use the default client it works fine, but with SMS Popup it shows a mystery unread text each time?
I have SMS popup set to mark messages as read and the default messaging app has the notifications turned off. I think the "Unknown" is some kind of corrupt MMS but SMS Popup wont clear it?
Hi Adam - thanks a bunch for this app! I have Nexus S with Gingerbread, and notice that sometimes the picture on a popup belongs to the contact I have last received a message from (as opposed to the current one).
ReplyDeleteIs this a known bug?
@deanparkr: I have heard of this happening before and as you guessed it is due to a "stuck" ghost sms or mms. I think there are apps out there to clear these ghost messages but I can't recommend one myself. Otherwise you could go to system Application settings and "clear data" on the messaging app (be sure to backup your messages first if you want to keep them) which may also fix things. Unfortunately SMS Popup just does a generic "how many unread" messages type query against the system database so that's why its picking up the ghost message.
ReplyDelete@denis: That's strange, I have heard a few other reports of this although I also use Nexus S w/GB and have never had that problem. Can you reliably reproduce? Does it always happen? If you can add as much information as possible to the issue tracker that would be helpful:
http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/detail?id=188
Your application is awsome! The best I ever seen. So good and so without ads. Here is my wishlist:
ReplyDelete- If is more than 1 message, to be able to switch between them (previous/next button or swipe right or scroll up-down…)
- Option for “Mark As Read” when hit “Replay” or “Inbox” button.
- Missed calls reminder. A must use another application for missed calls (Missed Reminder by Denis Solonenko)
- Separate ringtone for reminder, option to choose
- Handling message delivery reports, just beep and status bar notification when report arrives, without windows that must be closed.
Thanks, Thanka, Thanks
Hi! i love absolutetly love this app!
ReplyDeletei bought an xperia x10 in june and installed it, but i lost it so i just bought a new one yesterday and installed it right away, but on this new one, i dont get a popup window when i get a text when the screen is off, which i did on my previous one. i just get the sound and the blinking led-light. is there anything i can do to make the popup show so i dont have to open the screen to see who texted me?
thanks alot :-) ! -m
Hello and I apologize if this info is already here, I must have missed it. Does this app work with Google Voice as well as standard text program?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
@Saša Gošović: Thanks for the suggestions, the first one is something I'm working on already. The second should already work, unless I'm misunderstanding you. I think most of the others are covered by existing feature requests but if you can't find them in the list feel free to add: http://goo.gl/VEFtW
ReplyDelete@marthe: that's strange, be sure the option to turn the screen on for popup is enabled (it is by default), its under additional settings. if that's not it, then it could potentially be another app that is conflicting with sms popup (usually lock screen / home screen replacements or other apps that react when a message is received).
@Trish: There is only a basic level of integration right now, see http://goo.gl/jTTlS -this is something I want to add but requires the GV app add some features to allow 3rd party apps to integrate.
Hi, this is definitely my favorite app! I'd really like to see the screen turn on when i have a new text though! I know it's possible but I don't want to see a popup. Please!
ReplyDelete@SHOOBAY: Unfortunately right now the screen will only turn on if the popup is enabled. Otherwise the notifications function the same as the system app.
ReplyDeleteAre you working on reminder notifications playing a different sound? Like have it so we can customize the tone of the reminder notification? Basically play a different sound then the one set through the default and contact notifications.
ReplyDelete@tyty1234: There is a feature request for that, however I haven't had much time recently to work on the app. FR is here:
ReplyDeletehttp://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/detail?id=227
Marks as read doesn't work on my HTC Desire. Any ideas?
ReplyDelete@Joris: do you mean the home screen icon unread count not refreshing? or in the messaging app the message is still marked unread? the former is addressed here: http://goo.gl/2Rdg
ReplyDeleteLately when I have gotten a txt and the popup shows up in the landscape view, if I try to turn it upright it restarts my phone... any fix for this??
ReplyDeleteI've followed all the steps.. did the "mark read", disabled receiving notification on the default android messaging BUT.. when I receive a text and press close on the popup.. the top notification bar goes away fine.. but the default "Messages" widget still has the green "1" on top of it. I want that to go away when I press close on the popup.
ReplyDeleteAnd fix for this? or is that normal.
@Meredith: sorry, I haven't seen this issue before, if you can reliably reproduce the problem then please open a new issue here:
ReplyDeletehttp://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/entry
(i may need your help getting phone logs and some other debug info)
@Michael: if you use a HTC phone with Sense UI then SMS Popup cannot update the home screen icon unread count, see here for more info: http://goo.gl/2Rdg
@Adam K
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm using the Thunderbolt and the SMS Unread Count works awesome.
Thanks for the wonderful app. I was wondering if you have thought about making an app that customizes notifications for all alerts? I have tried a couple of other apps that do this and they are not only confusing but do not allow the amount of customization that your SMS app allows. For example for their vibrate notifications they do not allow you to set the vibrate pattern. They only let you choose 1 short vibrate, 2 medium vibrates, 3 long vibrates, ect. Also for the LED color they have set colors instead of letting you customize colors. I believe that based on your SMS Popup app you could make a superior app for all alerts. Just a though. Thanks!
ReplyDelete@natefizzle: It would be great to have an app that offers configuration for all notifications and I was thinking about building this at some point. However ultimately it would be best for this kind of configuration to be built into the system or the SDK rather than using a bunch of hacks to intercept notifications from other apps so in the end I decided not to proceed.
ReplyDeleteI think that in setting should be added editing buttons in quick answer, like in popup
ReplyDeleteHi Adam
ReplyDeleteFirst off all, you have a great app, but i have a bug on my G1
When i get a sms, sms popup works fine, but when i reply or mark it as read, if i get a another sms, the sms popup does not work, and i dont know if i get a sms
Any ideias?
Best regards
Psicop
Great app. Have used it on every rom and every phone since i discovered it. One question though. Have you thought about implementing themes? Maybe to change the popup look?
ReplyDeleteI was going to try but couldnt find the right files to modify within the apk.
@Daniel: I'm not sure what you mean, you can already configure the buttons that show in the popup.
ReplyDelete@Psicop: Sorry I haven't seen this before, you can browse known issues and file new issues at our bug tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/issues/list
@dmorg: Themes is a common feature request and something I would love to implement. Right now I'm working on supporting multiple SMS's in the popup (swipe left/right between), once that is complete I will hopefully have time to look at theming support.
Excellent app as is. Totally gets the job done and reliably.
ReplyDeleteMAJOR suggestion.
SLIDE to REPLY/CLOSE/DELETE
For most people, this will not be an issue, but what is the sense of a LOCK SCREEN if the popup which rests above it...is all BUTTON triggered. Make it SLIDE triggered...or give it that OPTION and you have the best sms text popup ever.
Ohh, another suggestion is when it times-out, eg after 10 seconds the screen turns off.., have the option in settings to leave the popup there instead of removing it.
ReplyDeleteScenario...I get an SMS...I am not there to see the popup because I am 5 seconds late getting to my phone. I turn on my screen...and BOOM, there is the popup waiting for me to reply/close/delete etc.
@themadproducer: slide to reply would be cool, initially i'm aiming to just add an option to hide the buttons unless the screen is unlocked (and a button to unlock the screen), that should prevent accidental presses but isn't as convenient as a slider type function.
ReplyDeleteFor your other suggestion, the popup should stay there already, however the phone will re-lock so it requires you unlock the screen to see the popup. This is needed for security. Hopefully one day Android itself will have the ability to show information on the lock screen which should solve this.
Adam,
ReplyDeleteAny way to change the color of the popup other than the default gray? Any help would be great!!
Kelly
@Kelly: sorry not possible right now, hopefully it will be in a future release.
ReplyDeleteJust got a new. Sprint Galaxy S Epic and downloaded this AWSOME APP thanks! Just can't seem to figure out how to make the preset messages work. Can anyone help ?
ReplyDelete@Shannon: make sure to enable "quick reply" in the SMS Popup settings, then when you reply to a message there will be a "presets" button that shows your preset messages.
ReplyDeleteNo way to have other update that fix the resolution of the coloured icon? Thw only one working is the gray gingerbread one. Thx
ReplyDelete@Giulio: what is the problem with the resolution? they work fine for me on Nexus S but the standard sized icons from prior Android versions do seem to be slightly too large compared to the stock gingerbread icon.
ReplyDeleteYou took the "problem", the coloured icons are not so good looking as the grey gingerbread one. Could you fix it, please?
ReplyDelete@Giulio: ah, i'm not the best at graphics myself, but if you are able to make them look better feel free to send them to me and I will add to the project accordingly, the current images are stored here right now (one for high-res phones and one for regular):
ReplyDeletehttp://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/source/browse/trunk/SMSPopup/res/drawable-hdpi/
http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/source/browse/trunk/SMSPopup/res/drawable/
I know you commented on this earlier, but has there been any progress on google's side to allow you to integrate with GV?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Nate
@TheYurtingYeti: no progress that I have heard of unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteHi Adam, when I get a sms and do not read the sms, but rather press the close button, the sms is shown as not read. This is not correct according to the settings. In fact if this option is activated, message should be shown as read, once it is closed. Can you check and let me know, if this can be corrected?
ReplyDeleteRegards Alex
@Alex: The message should be marked as "read", but some phones with custom messaging apps may have issues (like HTC Sense phones). See the FAQ for more information:
ReplyDeletehttp://goo.gl/2Rdg
and
http://goo.gl/yzzg
Hey adam,
ReplyDeleteBy any chance can you tell me when do you plan on releasing the update for quick reply for mutliple messages??? Since I've read on here you will have the swipe left to right feature. Please let me know because this is one of the important feature for your app. Thanks
I'll be very proud to help you on modifying the icons, but I'm not able at all to download from your links.
ReplyDeleteCould you please send me the 2 folders as attachment at giulio.piemonte@katamail.com?
THX
I'll work on them and send back
@JiGGs: Its in progress, its already partially working in the latest code revision. It still needs more work though and I haven't had much time to work on it recently. Hard to say when it will be done.
ReplyDeleteI'll be proud of working on them if you could please send me the two folders with the icons cause I'm totally unable to download them from you link. Sorry
ReplyDeleteMy mail is giulio.piemonte@katamail.com
I'll work on them and send it back again asap.
Giulio
hi adam i have recently started using a ZTE racer & after installing sms pop up i always get the force close box when i receive a message. i have re installed the app but it is still the same. any ideas why?
ReplyDeleteTop app, but i did upgrade rom 2.3 and de sound of notification don't work :(
ReplyDeleteHi, I've got a problem, when pushing on the button to answer to the sms (not quick answer), it opens a new conversation...
ReplyDeleteStill no contact picture, and the ugly blue of the popup is horrible, at least enable to change the color please :(. Oh and about the quick answer : please, enlarge the box... it's too small, just one line is not enough.
(Xperia X10 Mini Pro, Android 2.1)
Any chance you can add the ability to select a different SOUND for the reminder? This would make it awesome! please email me dahauss@unlimitedsounds.com and let me know if this can be done.
ReplyDelete@Giulio: You will need to checkout the source code to get the images, see here for instructions (just need to install subversion): http://code.google.com/p/android-smspopup/source/checkout
ReplyDelete@llanedeyrnjack: Sorry, I'm not sure. You can try capturing your system logs and sending them to me. I have an old apk app that does this if you don't know how (hopefully it still works): http://goo.gl/CuSYe
@rafael: does the sound work in the "test notification"?
@Leoberos: this is a known issue with SonyEriccson phones, please see here for a workaround: http://goo.gl/QOYSW
@Dave Hauss: There is a feature request filed for this. Unfortunately I still have a backlog of a ton of other bug fixes and features before I get to this.
When I have my phone set on vibrate , it will vibrate for incoming call but not for received text messages. Is there a fix for this?
ReplyDeleteAre you still working on adding multiple messages to the pop-up? There hasn't been an update in almost half a year. I love your work but that update would make this app perfect! If I may say so, another great idea would be quick compose (pressing and holding search button to quickly compose a message) keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeletewhen I reply with quick reply, the notification icon doesn't go away. Other text app's notifications are disabled. Can you help me with this? Thanks.
@Mary: it should always vibrate if you have the setting on in SMS Popup settings. make sure you have an alert tone set.
ReplyDelete@eric: yes, still working on it and i agree the app could do with an update (its been way too long). i just havent had the time to work on it recently.
@Marco: this can sometimes be an issue with the phone manufacturer "skin" (HTC Sense, Motoblur etc.), the FAQ may be able to help you but it does work correctly on most devices (as long as you disable the system messaging app notifications and use sms popup's): http://goo.gl/JKhHu
